Please find here a new paper detailing IETA’s views on the role of international credits in the EU Emissions Trading System post-2020.

Developed in consultation with a taskforce of IETA members with an interest in the EU ETS and in promoting a greater uptake of carbon markets in new jurisdictions, the paper looks at the need to preserve the option to use international credits in the future to meet the EU’s long-term emission reduction goals, whilst recognising the near-term supply-demand imbalance in the EU market. The aim of the paper is to set out the opportunities and challenges of using international credits in the future, and to inform policymakers of the policy options for considering their use in the future.
