Legal, Technology and Verification Working Groups
IETA’s Legal and Technical working groups focus on detailed issues such as over-the-counter (OTC) contract design, measurement, reporting and verification (MRV), and financial accounting rules for carbon.
- The Legal Working Group maintains IETA’s OTC documentation for trading European Union Allowances (EUAs), Certified Emission Reductions (CERs), and Emission Reduction Units (ERUs). IETA’s contracts have a history of being precise, compact and harmonious with other major trading contracts in the market. As carbon markets advance, so does IETA’s trading documentation. We are currently revising our contracts for post 2012.
- IETA’s Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) Working Group conducts research and publishes policy positions geared towards common MRV regimes across greenhouse gas trading and accounting systems worldwide, helping ensure the integrity of emission rights and enabling linking.
- By sponsoring research and partnering with specialists, IETA supports the development of robust financial accounting protocols to deal with the fiscal evaluation of carbon assets and liabilities, and the risks of carbon market coverage and participation.
