Unpacking the “NET” in Net-Zero: Role of Markets & Removals at Scale

September 23, 2020

Attempting to understand the multiple definitions and approaches to “net-zero” climate commitments can be challenging. This timely session will unpack government and corporate net-zero plans and pathways, and hone in on the crucial role that carbon markets must play to facilitate and accelerate these ambitious decarbonisation trajectories. IETA’s session will bring together business, government, and technical experts to discuss why “net zero” means different things to different people, share up-to-date research on how carbon markets can be used to enhance ambition, and examine the latest policy, financing, and corporate leadership innovations in support of Natural Climate Solutions.

AGENDA
Welcome & Opening Remarks by Katie Sullivan, Managing Director - IETA

Part 1: Leaders Dialogue - Markets & Cooperation to Unlock Ambition in North America

Part 2: Regional Action & Collaboration: Lessons from the Past  – Outlooks for Future

This session features governments and experts to explain how lessons from the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI)’s are being used to inform future sub-national activities, while addressing diverse communities and environmental justice issues. How is the regional collaborative working to ensure program benefits are shared with those who have traditionally born the brunt of climate change and air pollution. In addition, the panel will share the latest updates on the Transportation Climate Initiative (TCI), as the Northeast states look to build on the strengths of RGGI and address carbon emissions in the transportation sector. Is the post COVID world, an opportunity to crack the carbon transportation puzzle? Or should regulators back away until the economy recovers?

Part 3: Business Views on Carbon Pricing: What’s on the Horizon in North America?

North America’s carbon markets are arguably remaining resilient through COVID. In addition to the RGGI/TCI program, California-Quebec and Nova Scotia cap and trade systems are moving forward, prioritizing post-2020 design and the role of markets in achieving longer-term carbon neutral goals. Canada, federally, has launched its pan-Canadian carbon pricing program. Mexico has now launched its national pilot cap and trade system, set for full operationalization by 2022. In addition, we’re seeing a surge in voluntary corporate net-zero action and commitments. This panel of business experts will explore the current dynamic of North America’s compliance, pre-compliance and voluntary markets – and what opportunities and trends to watch over the coming decade.

European Green Deal: Can the EU Translate Climate Ambition into a Low-Carbon Reality?

September 8, 2020

The EU is leading the charge on climate ambition, but what will the European Green Deal really look like in practice? This event will look to European officials and policy experts to guide us through the EU’s most comprehensive climate package to date.

What goals will be set? What will this mean for the EU’s principal decarbonisation instrument, the EU ETS? Beyond the jargon, how might a Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism actually work? What does it take to align the EU ETS mechanisms with net zero? IETA’s virtual session will look at the role of international cooperation in carbon markets and how this will help the EU reach net zero. It will ask how important the Green Deal is in aiding a post-COVID recovery, and tackle how the EU aims to balance decarbonisation at home with industrial competitiveness internationally.

Rewilding the Planet - Can Carbon Markets Help Solve the Finance Gap for Natural Climate Solutions (NCS)

August 26, 2020

This session will explore why there is a growing interest from the private sector in NCS and how it can be realised. NCS could serve as a catalyst for delivering private finance to mitigation activities that help countries reduce their emissions while creating new jobs in rural areas. The session will discuss these opportunities and benefits for countries looking to adopt NCS into their carbon pricing systems. We will hear from financiers on what they are looking for to enable large scale investment and from governments on what action they are taking to incentivise and support non-state actor financing of NCS. We will conclude with thoughts on what actions can be taken forward by business and governments in partnership to further harness the private sector’s interest in NCS.

Regional Carbon Pricing & Markets Virtual Series - AFRICA Edition

August 25, 2020

We are delighted to announce the launch of the REGIONAL CARBON PRICING & MARKETS VIRTUAL SERIES, jointly organized by IETA, The World Bank and the Carbon Pricing Leadership Coalition (CPLC).  We are thrilled to inaugurate this series with the first edition focused on AFRICA.

The ongoing efforts to put in place carbon pricing policies and measures, as well as develop carbon markets in Africa, while limited, provide good starting points to reflect on the learnings and see where the expertise has been developed. To enable broader use of CPIs in Africa, more needs to be done to build a robust narrative and case for the application as complementary tools to support climate action and development.

This event will look at present action on Carbon Pricing and Markets in Africa, and how to close the gap.  We will analyse latest developments across the continent, and the role that Africa can play in helping to deliver the goals of the Paris Agreement. We will feature updates on how carbon markets can both increase climate ambition and play a vital role in post-pandemic recoveries as Governments look to re-start their economies. This edition will foster a discussion delving into different perspectives, looking at opportunities at the subnational and national level, as well as the relevance and contribution to mobilizing finance and investment in support of climate action and development.
