In 2020, Switzerland has concluded with Peru and Ghana bilateral agreements on cooperation under the Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. In June 2021, two further Agreements between Switzerland and Senegal as well as between Switzerland and Vanuatu have been approved by the Swiss Federal Council. These are the world’s first operational frameworks for the international transfer of mitigation outcomes at the standard of the Paris Agreement. They enhance investment security in climate programs and ensure avoidance of double counting, environmental integrity and the promotion of sustainable development, including the protection of human rights. The Agreements provide a framework for private actors and the voluntary markets to acquire high standard emission reductions or removals. The Agreements ensure that such mitigation outcomes are only counted once through the application of corresponding adjustment.

The Federal Office for the Environment will organize this workshop to inform interested actors about the following question:

    -           How do the bilateral Agreements function?

    -           How can the private sector participate?

    -           How can the Agreement be used for voluntary climate objectives of private and public actors?

The workshop will inform on the opportunities from the Article 6.2 Agreements and first lessons learnt will be shared. It is scheduled as a virtual event for 19 August 2021. The event will be held in English and will include time for questions and discussion.

The program and link for participation will be shared after registration. The event will take place depending on the number of registrations.

This event will discuss what role international carbon pricing and market frameworks can play in a decarbonising world aiming to reach net zero emissions around mid-century. An introductory presentation will set the scene for the subsequent panel discussion covering perspectives of public and private sector experts on the role of carbon markets in achieving net zero.
