IETA comment on withdrawal announcement of the EU Green Claims Directive

BRUSSELS, 20 June – Following our statement earlier today, on the proposal to withdraw the Green Claims Directive, we note with some trepidation, the withdrawal announcement of the Directive by the EU Commission.
We acknowledge the hard work of negotiators in striving for consensus on clear, fair, and accurate consumer guidance. However, this decision leaves a gap, introducing regulatory uncertainty at a time when credible corporate climate action depends on clarity and trust.
We continue to seek clarity for corporates on claims related to the use of carbon credits to achieve ambitious climate action and hope that ensuring clear and consistent rules on climate-related claims remains a priority for the EU.
We offer our support to negotiators on the next steps to help provide certainty for companies.
