IETA statement on recent call to withdraw the EU Green Claims Directive.

BRUSSELS, 20 June –  IETA has released a statement on the recent call to withdraw the EU Green Claims Directive.

While we recognise the concerns raised, we believe the upcoming trilogue on 23 June is a vital opportunity to get the Directive right, bringing clarity, credibility, and ambition to corporate climate claims.

Our key messages to EU negotiators are:

  • Remove the link to disclosure requirement rules currently under revision. We recommend removing the reference to the ESRS, as these rules are being revised under the Sustainability Omnibus procedure.
  • Allow use of both reduction and removal credits. Companies should be able to responsibly use high-quality credits, not only for residual emissions, to scale up the climate ambition we need now.
  • Recognise nature-based and engineered removals. Both play a vital role in reaching net zero and should be eligible for substantiating corporate climate claims.
  • Encourage the scale-up of high-integrity removals. This includes credits certified under the EU Carbon Removal Certification Framework (CRCF) and equivalent international crediting programmes.

Our message is simple, let’s not miss the chance to deliver a Directive that empowers companies to decarbonise at the pace needed to meet the Paris Agreement and EU climate targets.
