IETA LIVE WEBINAR: Carbon Markets, Forest Governance and Indigenous Voices in Brazil A brief discussion

About The Webinar

The evolution of Brazil’s climate and carbon market framework has brought renewed attention to forest protection, land-use emissions, and the role of Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IPLCs) in climate governance. At the same time, Indigenous territories across the country continue to face significant challenges, including illegal activities, land invasions, limited access to climate finance aligned with territorial priorities, legal uncertainty, and insufficient participation in decision-making processes that directly affect their territories and ways of life.

As discussions on REDD+, jurisdictional approaches, and carbon market integrity continue to evolve in Brazil and internationally, important questions on safeguards, governance, benefit-sharing mechanisms, legal certainty, and the conditions needed to ensure the meaningful participation of Indigenous Peoples in decisions on land-use-related climate initiatives are key to be discussed.

This conversation, hosted by IETA, will bring together Indigenous representatives and key stakeholders to discuss the opportunities, challenges, and questions surrounding land-use climate finance and the development of carbon markets in Brazil. The conversation will explore how evolving regulatory frameworks, integrity initiatives, and institutional arrangements may shape the future of forest protection efforts and the participation of Indigenous Peoples in these discussions.

The session will also provide space for Indigenous representatives to share first-hand perspectives on the realities faced in their territories, including governance challenges, pressures on land and natural resources, and priorities for ensuring that climate-related initiatives are developed with adequate safeguards, transparency, and respect for territorial rights.

Join this conversation examining the intersection of forest governance, Indigenous participation, climate policy, and Brazil’s evolving carbon markets, followed by an interactive Q&A session with participants.
