Guidelines for High Integrity Use of Verified Carbon Credits v2.0

IETA has released the updated VCM Guidelines v2.0, outlining a pragmatic framework for the high-integrity use of verified carbon credits (VCCs) by companies as a complement to internal decarbonisation.

The revised guidelines reflect growing research showing that while some progress is being made towards corporate net zero, most companies remain off track - highlighting the importance of voluntary carbon markets in bridging the gap.

Building on the first edition published in 2024, VCM Guidelines v2.0 set out seven key principles, from aligning with the Paris Agreement and disclosing emissions profiles to ensuring only high-quality verified carbon credits are used and claims are robust and transparent. This refreshed version provides much-needed clarity for businesses and policymakers at a time when consistent rules are essential to scale investment in carbon markets.
