IETA Response to Australia's CCA 2026 APA Consultation and Safeguard Mechanism Review

IETA Response to Australia's CCA 2026 APA Consultation and Safeguard Mechanism Review

Ahead of Australia's Safeguard Mechanism Review, IETA has submitted its response to the Climate Change Authority's public consultation.

  • To support an effective, investable and credible carbon market, our submission recommends:
  • Strengthening long-term policy certainty towards 2035. Maintaining technology- and sector-neutral baseline decline rates.
  • Expanding the Safeguard Mechanism to support economy-wide emissions reductions at lowest cost.
  • Strengthening confidence in the ACCU scheme by increasing project-level transparency and avoiding arbitrary limits or discounting of credits.
  • Exploring high-integrity Article 6 credits to complement domestic abatement and support the achievement of Australia’s 2035 NDC targets.

Thank you to all working group members who contributed their expertise and insights to the submission. We hope to connect with many of you at the CMI Singapore Carbon Market & Investor Forum on 27 August.
