ALMA (Accelerating Land Use Mitigation in the Amazon) Brasil is a collaborative initiative led by the International Emissions Trading Association (IETA) and the Oil and Gas Climate Initiative (OGCI) to support the development and scale-up of high-integrity forest carbon markets in the Brazilian Amazon.
Launched in October 2023, the initiative focuses on advancing nesting approaches for REDD+ activities within jurisdictional programmes. By addressing methodological alignment, accounting and MRV, regulatory coherence, and social and environmental integrity, ALMA Brasil seeks to contribute to credible and operational models that can support integrated carbon market frameworks.
The state of Pará serves as the initial case study, reflecting its relevance for land-use mitigation and its evolving institutional landscape. ALMA Brasil operates as a technical and collaborative platform, with the objective of developing scalable and replicable approaches that may inform other jurisdictions over time.
ALMA Brasil is a standalone initiative and is not formally connected to existing working groups.
Objectives
ALMA Brasil aims to support the design and evolution of nesting frameworks that enhance environmental integrity, improve transparency, and strengthen confidence in forest carbon markets. The initiative provides a structured space for technical dialogue and knowledge exchange to inform policy, market practices, and implementation pathways.
Phases
Looking Ahead
From 2026 onwards, ALMA Brasil intends to build on its initial experience to support continued progress on nesting implementation and to explore opportunities for broader application and replication in other jurisdictions.
ALMA Brasil is grounded in multi-stakeholder engagement. The initiative convenes public and private actors across the forest carbon value chain, including governments, project developers, standards and registries, investors, technical organisations, and representatives of civil society. This collaborative approach underpins the initiative’s efforts to ensure that nesting frameworks are credible, inclusive, and fit for purpose.
